Description

Lacquer box, tea jar. Box, lacquer and inlaid with shell. Cylindrical box with a seated lid (A) and rounded sides tapering to a flat, recessed base. The black roiro (black lacquer polished to a deep gloss) ground is decorated on the lid and sides in flat gold (makie) and red lacquer with dragonflies. The eyes and thorax of each dragonfly are inlaid in aogai (small pieces of blue-green inlaid shell) and the tails are in gold. Two dragonflies have red lacquer tails. The circular, recessed base and interior are black with gyobu nashiji (shimmering spangles with large flakes).
