For biography of the Earl of Hardwicke, see newspaper cutting in file and DNB. The inscription presumably refers to Philip Yorke, third Earl of Hardwicke (1757-1834), who was educated at Queens' College Cambridge and in 1806 was elected High Steward of the University. He was M.P. for Cambridge from 1780-1790, when he succeeded to the Earldom and was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.
