An illustration for Morris' 'Earthly Paradise'. Later used for the large oil (1872) now at Lisbon. These three drawings (see also 2009.2 and 2009.3) are all stylistically similar, and therefore probably illustrate the same story. They can be dated to 1867 or perhaps later, but the story for which they are designs does not appear in the Earthly Paradise as published (1868-70). They may be connected with No. 1235, which also features Venus, but cannot be assigned to any of the published poems.
