One of a collection of 486 coins, tokens, banknotes and medals, comprising mainly 18th-20th century British and foreign coins, but including some Roman, medieval and other pieces. The collection was formed by Peter Allen (1905-93) and given to Mrs Allen Manheim, who is generously offering it to the Museum with the proviso that ‘any coins not required for the collection may be sold and the proceeds used to purchase other items for the Department of Coins and Medals’. Sixty-five items have been selected for the collection: 58 coins, including an antoninianus of Carausius (AD 286-93); a silver penny of William I, Paxs type; a penny of Edward II, class 11b3/11b2, Durham; a groat of Edward IV’s second reign, London; a shilling of Charles I; and a crown of Charles II; a gold sovereign and half-sovereign of Victoria; one token of the British Armed Forces; three banknotes, Belgium (1) and Germany (2); and three medals, including two German military awards (a 1914 Iron Cross 2nd class and 1939 War Merit Cross 2nd class) which were picked up by a friend of Mr Allen among debris in Hitler’s bunker after the Allied capture of Berlin in 1945.
