An image of Double penny

A coin of outstanding importance. Only two double pennies are known, the other of the same ruler, mint and moneyer but a different design, being in the Danish National Collation (Hauberg 1). The phenomenon of a multiple denomination is quite extraordinary for eleventh-century Europe. The design is that of a regular penny (Hauberg 7), but the dies and flan are larger and the coin is twice the weight of a penny (c.0.95g). Its purpose is a matter of debate. It is unlikely that it could ever in practice have had a monetary function, and it was probably intended as a presentation piece. The design imitates a Byzantine histamenon nomisma of Michael V (1041-2), and it is one of a group of coin designs of Sven Estridsen that were apparently inspired by Byzantine coins in the treasure brought back to Scandinavia in 1045 by Harald Hardrada following his service in the Imperial guard.

Normans, William of Aumale, earl of York (1138-79), silver penny, York mint, c.1150. Obv. WILL / EAMVS, standing figure in armour and helmet brandishing a sword, mullet in field. Rev. cross patée in quatrefoil, with annulets on cusps and in margin, pseudo inscription containing E, ?, B, I, and symbols typical of the Ornamental York series (unique, unpublished), rim chipped, 0.99g. From St Jamess Auction no. 3 (3 October 2005), lot 176; no prior provenance, but seems first to have been offered in the trade early 2005, and probably a recent find.

An image of Double-Schauguildiner

This is one of the most splendid and renowned equestrian portrait coins of the Renaissance. It belongs to a new wave of large silver coins prompted by the discovery of new mines in the Tyrol and Saxony in the late 15th century. Yet even by current standards this new piece was more massive and impressive than anything that had gone before. Maximilian is shown in full ceremonial armour, with an imperial crown on his helmet and carrying the imperial banner. The horse, also in full dress armour, has plumes on his head and is draped with an ornate mantle richly decorated with symbols of the Empire and the House of Burgundy. The Krönungsdoppelguldiner was first produced in 1508-9 to mark the coronation of Maximilian I as Emperor. It was struck at Hall, in the Tyrol, in very small numbers as imperial presentation pieces. Only two Obv dies and one Rev were used, engraved by the court engraver Ulrich Ursentaler. The first Obv die carries no date, but the second, used for this coin, has 1509. In 1517 the dies were taken from Austria to the mint of Antwerp where they were used again with a rosette added before the horse. This specimen belongs to the 1517 issue. All three issues are very rare and highly prized.
