Collocation: seven gatherings containing the following number of folios: nine (one attached to the front cover), eleven; thirteen; eleven; twelve; eleven; eight (one attached to back cover). 73 leaves. Perforated along spine. Pages 43 verso to 57 verso blank, except 52 recto. Rectos blank Page 59 to end. Many versos blank up to page 42, but not regularly so.

This sketchbook contains a number of preliminary notes and studies for 'Period Piece', 1952. Studies focus mainly on figures/portraits, horses and cows, swans, architecture and landscape including trees. One inverted portrait of a seated girl (pen and black ink) Page 12 verso. One pen and ink study relating to chaperoning incident described in Period Piece, page 19 recto. One graphite portrait of man, identifed as 'Professor of ?Music from ?Cirene'
