Note

Drawn from life, probably using Babette Giroux as the model (see also PD.22-1994). Both this and the study in Conté crayon on the verso are preliminary ideas for 'Summer in the Mountains', frontispiece for Daphnis and Chloë, Book 1, Ashendene Press, Chelsea, 1928/31 and 'Chloé in Love' [160], an illustration to Daphnis and Chloë, 1928/31, p. 53. PD.23-1994 was also a preparatory study for 'Sleepers' [141], 1927, and the study on the reverse a preparatory sketch for the left hand figure in 'The River Bank', [135], 1926.
