Glassmaker: Unknown
Clear glass, cut and wheel-engraved. Facetted ogee bowl; facetted baluster stem with basal collar; circular foot. Decorated on the front with two men in armour all' antica clasping hands, standing above an oval panel containing an inscription in German relating to David and Jonathan. On either side there are small landscapes in which a hound is chasing a hare, surrounded by scrolls, strapwork, swags, etc. The rim is encircled by a border of scallops. The underside of the foot is cut with a circle of radiating ellipses, and engraved on the top edge with scallops.
History note: Viktor Schick, Prague; Mrs Hedwig Schick; sold Sotheby's, 4th May 1939, Catalogue of the well-known collection of fine Continental glass formed by the late Viktor Schick, Esq., of Prague, The property of Mrs Hedwig Schick, p. 13, lot 41, first part. Not marked as purchased by Reitlinger, but conforms in size and description to this. H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
