Mercantile Goblet

Mercantile goblet/linen industry goblet. Clear glass, cut, wheel-engraved and gilt. Ogee bowl, the lower part cut in relief with four shell or anthemions; facetted knop over a facetted stem; circular, slightly domed foot. The glass is broken off the stem below the knop. The bowl is decorated with Mercury and Neptune beneath a lady and gentleman seated in a loggia; men with a large package beside a warehouse, with above the interior with spinning and weaving in progress; and Italianate buildings beside a quay with a cart approaching from the left, and a merchant ship moored alongside. The foot is cut on the underside with alternating oval and straight cuts.
