Coverboards covered with black watered silk and grained effect over board. The spine is bound with embossed cloth. Off-white paper. Collocation: three gatherings containing the following number of leaves: twelve (two attached to front cover); eight; ten (one cut out and two attached to back cover). figure studies, often repeated studies for particular pieces (engravings) or possible portrait studies (women, young children).
Production date: circa AD 1911 : (?1909 - possibly earlier).
This sketchbook, used while the artist was at the Slade, contains preliminary sketches for the following engravings: 'The Murderer' [P1144] ?1910/11; 'Clerk Saunders' [19] ?1909/11; 'Margaret's Return [22] ?1910/11; 'Travellers' [16] ?1909/11; 'Cobbled Yard [14] ?1909/11; 'Despair [5] ?1909/11; 'Demeter and Kore' [P150-1974]; 'Sir Patrick Spens' [11] ?1909/11; '?Sweet William's Ghost/Clerk Saunders [19] ?1909/10 [P.1146-1974].
