Description

Coverboards covered in black watered silk and grain effect over board. The spine is bound with embossed cloth. Off-white paper. Collocation: five gatherings containing the following number of leaves: five (one attached to the front cover and one cut out); ten (one cut out); ten; ten (one cut out); ten (one attached to back cover, one loose and three cut out). Figure studies and studies for bookplates.

Production date: circa AD 1911 : (? 1909 probably).

Note

This sketchbook probably dating from 1909, when Gwendolen Raveat was at the Slade, contains preliminary drawings for the following wood engravings: 'Wood Nymphs', [21], ?1909/10 P.1146-1974; 'Annie of Rough Royal', [15] ?1909; 'Knight of the Burning Pestle', [1], 1909; 'Fan Anuri' [3] ?1909; 'Travellers [16], 1909; ?'Le Vent' [4], 1909; 'Ursula Darwin's bookplate' [570], ?1909; 'The Marsh', [6] 1909. Also studies for bookplates for Dorothy Lamb (featuring a figure on hands and knees with an animal skin draped over them as a costume) and Geoffrey Keynes (featuring two travellers studying a baby sat by the road). Page 14 has a study captioned 'Tamlaue' or 'Tamlane' (naked travellers on horseback), Page 1 and 10 has 'Annie of Rough Royal' (woman by a pool, one leg raised), there are other studies for this image also.
