Earthenware, aeropgraphed on-glaze in pink, decorated with sgraffito and painted in brown and black.

Earthenware coffee pot and cover of ‘Kestrel' shape with 'Leaf' pattern: tall, circular body, upper half bellied out; spout of rectangular section with small bird-mouth-like rim; ‘D’ shaped loop handle opposite spout. Cover slightly domed with wing-like knob and air hole. Pot aerographed in pink, except for handle, rim and thin band around the base. Sgraffito leaf on each side, finished in brown, each with further leaf outlined in brown and thin black feathered swirls. Spout pink; cover white with pink band. Underside indented within foot-rim, glazed.

History note: Formerly in the collection of Susie Cooper; bequeathed to her son, Timothy Barker, who gave it to the Museum.

Note

The shape range 'Kestrel' was first introduced at the British Industries Fair in 1932, and produced in various patterns for more than 20 years. A larger coffee pot of the same shape was also available. ‘Leaf’ pattern, no. 2083, was introduced in 1947, available in pink, smoke blue and sage colours, and shown at the British Industries Fair that year.
