Earthenware, aeropgraphed on-glaze in pink, decorated with sgraffito and painted in brown and black.

Earthenware coffee cup and saucer of ‘Kestrel' shape with 'Leaf' pattern:
Cup, circular with convex sides, narrow base, angled loop handle. Exterior coated in pink, except for handle and rim. Sgraffito leaf on one side, finished in brown, with further leaf outlined in brown and thin black feathered swirls. White handle, brown band to interior near rim. Underside slightly concave within foot-rim, glazed.
Saucer circular, indented at centre, convex sides with flattened rim. Top coated in pink. Sgraffito leaf at centre. Underside with foot-rim, glazed.

History note: Formerly in the collection of Susie Cooper; bequeathed to her son, Timothy Barker, who gave it to the Museum.

Note

The shape range 'Kestrel' was first introduced at the British Industries Fair in 1932, and produced in various patterns for more than 20 years. ‘Leaf’ pattern, no. 2083, was introduced in 1947, available in pink, smoke blue and sage colours, and shown at the British Industries Fair that year.
