Description

Fritware painted in blue and black under a transparent white glaze

Fritware bowl, wheel thrown, painted in blue and black under a transparent white glaze.
Shape: carinated bowl with a slightly out-turned rim, sits on a narrow, slightly flaring foot ring base
Interior: a blue line is painted on the rim. On the body a complex arabesque pattern, incorporating palmettes and split leaves, radiates from a star shaped rosette on the base.
Exterior: on the rim and neck a blue band is outlined in black and painted in black with an inscription. On the body black T-shaped arabesques alternate with blue and black palmettes above a black band. Glaze covers the foot ring unevenly, including the underside with the exception of the rim of the foot ring.

History note: Purportedly from the Gurgan area; the father of Major Raymond Ades; Major Raymond Ades; the Ades family, by whom lent in 1983.

Given by the Ades family to the commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the opening of the Fitzwilliam Museum
