Fritware coated in a white glaze painted with lustre
Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted with lustre.
Shape: globular body sitting on a low foot ring, cylindrical neck tapers via a carination to a narrow bead rim. A strap handle with thumb rest is attached to the neck and upper body.
Exterior: on the neck and handle a roughly painted fret pattern is enclosed above and below by a lustre panel. On the upper body an inscription is surrounded by scrolls, both painted in lustre, and enclosed above and below by bands of lustre incised with further inscriptions. On the lower body, painted in lustre, a chain stripe pattern is enclosed above and below by concentric lines. Glaze runs over the lower body, terminating in droplets.
Interior: the rim is painted with a lustre band and on the neck four spots of lustre are visible. Glaze covers the surface as far as is visible.
History note: Purportedly found in the Gurgan area; the father of Major Raymond Ades; Major Raymond Ades by whom lent to the Fitzwilliam in 1976; the Ades family
Given by the Ades family to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the opening of the Fitzwilliam Museum.
