Description

Bust with death mask. Plaster, cast. The sitter's head faces to the front; clean shaven and without hair; eyes closed. In a pine box, lined with plaster coloured red, the exterior painted black and decorated with a gilt brass anthemion on each of the front corners. On a sunk panel on the front, the following inscription is painted in red: 'This Case/with the Mask of the philanthropic/MR HOWARD/(who died 20th Jan: 1790)/was sent from Cherson in Russia/ to his Kinsman & Executor/Samuel Whitbread Esq/WHOSE SON/THE LATE SAMUEL WHITBREAD ESQR M.P. GAVE/ IT TO MR GEORGE GARRARD A.R.A. BY WHOM IT WAS/ PRESENTED TO THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM, 1822.'
