Description

Roundel of boxwood, containing a carved bust portrait. Carved in relief, but below the level of the narrow border, is a bust portrait in profile facing right. The hair is cut short and the beard and moustache are closely trimmed. The shirt has a small ruff, high in the neck. A low square necked pleated tunic is worn over the shirt.

Note

This is a portrait of John Frederich, Elector of Saxony, b. 1503, d. 1554. One of the principal supporters of Protestantism, who opposed the Emperor Charles V, lost the battle of Mulberg and was taken prisoner in 1547.
