New Martyr George of Ioannina
Printmaker: Kaldis, Ioannis Konstantinos
Engraved copper printing plate for a Greek Orthodox religious paper icon; recto: the New Martyr George of Ioannina; verso: the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Related to religious orthodox copper engravings created on Mount Athos, Greece where a tradition of printmaking amongst the monastic communities flourished from the 17th until the 19th century. Religious Orthodox prints were cheap to produce and served as prayer icons for the poor or those unable to commission a hand-painted icon. They also functioned as a form of marketing and were used by the monks who sponsored their making to encourage people to undertake pilgrimages and support the monasteries financially. The New Martyr George of Ioannina was a young Christian who maintained his Christian beliefs whilst working as a servant and groom for the Ottoman Turks at Ioannina. His marriage to a Christian girl and the baptism of his son into the Orthodox Church led the Turks to accuse him of abandoning his Muslim faith and to his subsequent martyrdom at their hands on January 17, 1838.
