Yellow Hibiscus (Paeonia lactiflora) and Chestnut Rose (Rosa roxburghii)
A watercolour drawing from the album PD.132-1973. This is a Chinese export watercolour depicting yellow hibiscus and chestnut rose. The composition shows a large yellow hibiscus bloom with five rounded petals and a prominent dark red center, accompanied by oval green leaves and small yellow buds on branching stems. On the right, climbing chestnut rose displays small pink double flowers with characteristic compound leaves and thorny stems, along with small red rose hips. The painting demonstrates the fine brushwork characteristic of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combining traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting style and Western botanical illustration.
