Note

Drypoint with a small amount of surface tone. Signed on the plate at upper left: 'A. Legros'. The third state after the artist's initials were replaced by a signature and following the reduction of the plate from 317x238mm to 218x170mm. An uneven u-shaped line on the collar of the figure may indicate that this impression represents a later state of the plate. The Bliss catalogue (Dodgson (Legros)) lists five states beyond the three described by Poulet-Malassis/Thibadeau. Another impression of the third state is P.91-1937. The third state of the plate was published in _The Portfolio_, no.58, November 1874 and reissued in _Eighteen Etchings by English, French and German Artists_, with notes by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (Seeley, Jackson and Halliday, London, 1877, pp.14-15. It was reproduced in photogravure in _L'Art_, no.87, 27 August 1876.
