Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of an Old Man representing Winter.

Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, press-moulded and lead-glazed on the visible surfaces. The flat underside is unglazed and has a ventilation hole in the centre. The shallow base is square with rounded corners. Winter, represented as a bearded old man, sits on a heap of logs, with a square aperture at the back to take an attachment. He has his right leg bent and his left leg extended so that the foot projects over the front of the base. He looks down and leans forward towards a vase-shaped, two-handled brazier on his right, holding his hands over his right knee and leaning on a stick held in his left hand. He wears a hooded, buttoned-up coat with wide cuffs and a full gathered skirt, breeches, stockings, and shoes with bows.
