Inscription or legends present

  • Text: Now tho' Jupiter's Beard was / so white, the dress of the next in / the procession was much whiter, / and it seemed strange that anyone / should come to a grand festival clothed only in white flannel, even tho' the sun was hot, and the dress / had been well cut and fitted to / perfection. He said his name was generally know as Edelweiss, a / nickname because his real one was / so long. Then he explained why he / wore this / "Some things live in the Isle of Wight, / And some live in the Channel, / But I can't live by day or night / Unless I'm in white flannel." / Mrs. Larch said she was glad it was / not flannelette, as that was the / cause of many deaths. Then he / added "Alas! my flannel also kills many. I used to live in / open flat places, but so many people / would come to see me that I was obliged to retire to out-of-the-way ones. / But still they will come by dangerous paths, and they fall down precipices & / are killed, but it really is not my fault and I think my only vice is in my / name."
