Description

Late Medieval, lead-glazed earthenware jug, painted underglaze in manganese and bluish-green, with lobed leaves on stalks.

Earthenware. The interior is lead-glazed brownish-yellow; the exterior is covered with a translucent whitish glaze. Painted in manganese and pale bluish-green underglaze.
Shape 5. Slender ovoid body expanding towards the base which is concave underneath, short neck with spout and most of the rim restored, and loop handle of almost circular section.
On the body, there are three lobed leaves on curved stalks reserved in a green ground with two horizontal manganese bands below; on the neck, two manganese bands with interlaced arcading filled with green above, and on the handle, four green stripes alternate with three groups of three manganese.

History note: Signor Avvocato Marcioni or Cavaliere Capitano Lucatelli; Sotheby's, 16-17 February 1914, Catalogue of the collections of early Italian pottery formed by Signor Avvocato Marcioni and Cavaliere Capitano Lucatelli of Orvieto, lot 79B (3). Purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1933 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
