Description

Late Medieval maiolica jug, painted in manganese with a badge at the front.

Buff earthenware. The interior and lower part are lead-glazed pale yellowish-brown; the rest is tin-glazed pinkish-grey. Painted in dark manganese.
Shape 20. Ovoid with disk base, cylindrical neck, carinated rim, pinched spout and loop handle of D section.
The front is decorated with a badge.

History note: William Ridout; Christie's, 13 December 1938, The William Ridout collection of Italian majolica, European pottery, faience and delftware, part of lot 105; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
