Late Medieval maiolica body of a jug, painted in black and green with a scorpian.
Earthenware. The interior and upper part of the exterior are covered with thin white tin-glaze; the lower part and base unglazed. Painted in black and pale green.
Elongated pear shape on low foot with turned edge; about a third of the way up from the base the body widens slightly above bands of turning; carinated rim and pinched spout.
The front is decorated with a scorpion surrounded by sprigs and squiggles.
History note: Probably purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1933 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
