Description

Late Medieval maiolica two-handled bowl, painted in manganese and green with a trefoil-shaped plant inside.

Buff earthenware. Tin-glazed pale pinkish-grey on the inside; lead-glazed yellowish-brown on the rim, exterior and base. Painted in manganese and copper-green.
Shape 31. Circular with curved sides, narrow disk base and two strap handles.
Inside, within two concentric manganese circles, there is a green trefoil-shaped plant flanked by crosses and curved strokes; below the rim, a narrow manganese band.

History note: William Ridout; Christie's, 13 December 1938, The William Ridout collection of Italian majolica, European pottery, faience and delftware, probably lot 108; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
