Description

Late Medieval maiolica bowl, painted in manganese, black and green with, on the inside, two intertwined curved ribbons enlcosing a heart or leaf and cross-hatching.

Earthenware, tin-glazed greyish-white on both sides; base unglazed. Painted in dark manganese, black and copper-green.
Shape 24. Circular with narrow rim, carinated sides and narrow foot.
Inside, within two concentric manganese circles, there is a heart or leaf enclosed by intertwined curved ribbons reserved in cross-hatching; on the rim, cross-hatching; and on the outside, black chevrons between green horizontal bands edged with black.

History note: Purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1933 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
