Description

Late Medieval maiolica plate, painted in manganese and green with, in the middle, a leaf and coiling stem, and on the rim, radiating strokes.

Pale buff earthenware. The front tin-glazed greyish-beige, the reverse lead-glazed pale brown. The tin-glaze has run over onto the back. Painted in dark manganese and copper-green.
Shape 37. Circular with narrow sloping rim, shallow well and narrow disk base.
In the well, there is a leaf on a coiling stem; on the rim, radiating strokes in groups of alternate colours.

History note: Purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1933 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
