Description

Maiolica plate, painted in relief-blue and purple with a shield in the central medallion, with concentric circles of berries and bands on the rim.

Plate. Earthenware. Tin-glazed very thickly overall. The glaze is bubbly, bumpy, and crazed. Painted in dark relief-blue and very dark purple.
Circular with wide sloping rim and small, shallow central depression, standing on a narrow footring.
The central medallion contains a rectangular shield bearing the arms quarterly azure and argent with in chief a label enclosing two fleur-de-lis azure with a bow above, and a stylised floral spray on either side. The rim is decorated with groups of short strokes, alternating squares and squiggles, and oblique strokes between concentric circles, a wreath of berries, and two purple bands round the edge. The middle of the back is marked `VF' in purple.
