Tin-glazed earthenware dish painted in polychrome with a wolf or hound in the middle, surrounded by swags, concentric circles, lozenges and bows.
Earthenware, tin-glazed on the front, probably over slip; the reverse slipped cream and glazed pale beige. There are three spur marks on the front. Painted in blue, green, dark yellow, and a little red.
Shape 67. Circular with shalloe sloping sides which have warped badly in firing, standing on a narrow disk base.
In the middle, a wolf or hound runs to the left, framed by concentric circles: two narrow blue, a wide yellow and a wider blue. Beyond, there are blue arrows, red and green parti-coloured leaves linked by blue swags, and a series of narrow blue, yellow and blue concentric circles. The outer border is of yellow lozenges within blue ovals separated by bows. Next to the edge are narrow blue and wide yellow bands.
History note: The provenance of this dish is not firmly established. It may be the `Siena type plate w. wolf in centre' purchased by Reitlinger from Cecil Leitch & Kerin on 7 October 1932. H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
