Description

Fragment of a statue in the form of a head of a man, wearing a helmet.

Sandstone statue fragment. Only the head is preserved and depicts a man wearing a helmet. The Nubians (from southern Egypt/modern Sudan) were famous warriors and often fought for the Egyptian army. This particular representation may be a statue of a deceased person, intended to represent the man during his lifetime. It is also possible that the representation functioned as part of the funerary cult of the dead and was intended as an image to which the Ba (spirit) of the deceased could return. Such images were placed in tombs. The surface is badly eroded and many of the detailed features are now missing.
