Description

Carved wooden staff head, featuring Bes stood on a lotus columns. The arms are missing, with exposed bronze joints and dowel holes at the shoulders, and dowel holes. A carved square mortise is visible at the side of the eye on the proper left. A deeply carved mortise runs down the length of the Bes figure on the rear, and is filled with an unknown hard substance. This may have been part of a ceremonial staff head (other examples are present; such as BM EA26267). However, the presence of the back cavity is parallel to that of Louvre E 5723, which is labelled as a 'fetal mummy'.
