Inscription or legends present

  • Text: Matthieu de la Ferté (1743-1799); one of the members of the Administration des défenses de la Maison du Roi (Louis XVI) whose name is entered under the heading of that office in several 'Almanachs Royeaux' up to 1789, was a man of art, viveur and courtier who emigrated abroad during the Revolution and took an active part in the Royalist efforts to re-establish the Ancien Régime. He is said to have re-entered France seven times under various disguises between 1791 and 1794 so as to keep in touch with the partisans in Paris and in its provinces. The National Convention in 1793 sentenced him to death in default and seized his property. His wife, née Courbois had remarkable literary gifts and lived till 1839. Their daughter married Mgr de Riverère, another active agent of the Restoration, who wash French Ambassador to Turkey in 1820. Jean Masson Collection.
