Note

Earthenware plates and dishes with moulded shell edges were made by many English pottery manufacturers between about 1775 and 1860. A plate was illustrated in the Leeds Pottery catalogue of shapes first issued in 1783. Chinoiserie designs inspired by Chinese porcelain painted underglaze in blue were popular, but are less satisfactory on creamware than on pearlware which had a bluish-white colour which was more flattering to blue decoration.
