Earthenware, tin-glazed and painted in enamels. The shepherd, stands with his arms folded in front of him, leaning against a tree trunk with a recumbent dog at his feet. He wears a chequered puce sleeveless jacket, over a white shirt. He has mauve and blue striped breeches, and bare legs and feet. He stands on a moulded base picked out in green.
History note: Sotheby's 30 May 1949, Sir Perceval Eckstein sale, lot 25; H. E. Backer from whom purchased on 16 March 1950
