Description

White salt-glaze stoneware, painted in polychrome enamels with Chinese figures in a garden

Off-white stoneware, thrown, turned, salt-glazed, and painted in turquoise blue, green, yellow, pink, mauve, red, and black enamels. The wide bowl has a slightly flaring lip and stands on a foot. The outside is decorated with three Chinese people alternating with four large garden pots, surrounded by flowers. Two of the pots are striped red and yellow, while the other two are a mixture of blue, red and yellow. Between the two striped pots is a large multi-coloured rock. The figures are a seated man under a parasol, a lady wearing a black hat, and another seated man. At the bottom of the bowl on the inside is a spray of flowers, in red, mauve and yellow, with green and blue leaves. The inner edge of the bowl has a border of shallow semi-circular panels of green and black trellis edged by curving mauve lines.
