Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed and painted in blue. The jug has a low foot, a bulbous body, short slender neck with a projecting band round the top, and loop handle which is rounded on the exterior. On the front is the inscription CLARIT/ 1647 with a star on each side.
History note: Sir John Evans (1823-1908); sold Christie's 14 February, 1911, Interesting Collection of Lambeth pottery,Rhodian, Hispano-Mauro and other Faience, Silver Plate and Objects of Art, lot 8; 24 guineas to the dealer, Mr Harding, who sold it for 27 guineas to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.

Glass bottles were scarce in the mid seventeenth century, so earthenware or Rhenish stoneware bottles were used for the short-term storage or serving of wine. Claret was a wine imported in casks from the Bordeaux area of France. It was then a paler red in colour than it is today.
Probably made in Southwark, or possibly in Brislington
