Pottery: Pickleherring Pottery (Probably)
Tin-glazed earthenware plate painted in blue with a landscape surrounded by a border of sailing ships
Buff earthenware, tin-glazed and painted in blue. Circular with a broad rim and shallow well, with concave underside and slightly recessed foot. In the middle is a landscape with buildings, a high tower, and a church steeple, and in the foreground a post to which is attached a sheet bearing the date '1649'. On the rim is a border of a sailing ship and a sponged tree growing out of a wavy cliff, repeated five times. To the right of centre at the top are the initials 'H/T L', and at the bottom, the date, '1649'.

The plate was probably made at the Pickleherring pottery but potteries at Montague Close, and Rotherhithe were operating in Southwark at the date of production
The sailing ships round the rim resemble the Dutch Buss, a heavy fishing boat.
