Pottery: unidentified London pottery (Possibly)
Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with Chinese style flowering plants, birds and a hedge
Buff earthenware with bluish tin-glaze painted in blue; the reverse is unevenly glazed, with many blow holes. The circular dish has a wide slightly sloping rim, and shallow curved sides, and stands on a footring. The well is decorated with Chinese style flowering plants and birds, and a fence within a narrow border of trellis diaper on the sides. Round the edge there are six formal plant motifs, and two smaller ones on opposing sides. The reverse is inscribed within the footring T/IH/November 5 1746'.
History note: J.E. Hodgkin (d. 1912) by 1891; S, 4 December 1903, Hodgkin Sale, lot 281; sold to S. Fenton, Cranbourn Street for £8; his 1906 Catalogue; bought from a catalogue of Fenton's for £10 on 14 March 1906 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.
