Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with Chinese figures in a landscape

Buff earthenware tin-glazed pale turquoise-blue and painted in blue. The pot has a bulbous body with a short straight neck, and is supported on three small feet in the shape of birds. It has a sucking spout decorated with a zig-zag of clay on the front and two loop handles each having a snake on the back with a small bird perching on it. On either side of the handles there are spirals of clay. The domed cover (A) has a flange round the edge, a pierced ball finial, and handles similar to those on the pot. The body and cover are painted with Chinese figures in landscapes and with the inscription '16/G/IA/86' on the front to the viewer's left of the spout.
