Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with a vase of flowers, birds, and inscribed 'WV/1720'

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed, and painted in blue. The pot has a bulbous body with a wide mouth resting on a slightly domed circular foot. It has two applied scroll handles of oval section with a thumb rest at the top, and on one side a curved tubular spout with an applied snake on the front. The domed cover has a circular vertical projection decorated with applied fleur-de-lys, and crosses, which were originally linked to straps to form a crown, and are now broken off. This surrounds a cup-shaped container which probably had a cover. The back is decorated with a vase of flowers flanked by birds, and the front has birds on either side of the spout. The upper part and the cover are decorated with borders of lapopets, scrolls and flowers. At the base of the spout is the inscription 'WV/1720'.
