Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with a dinner party

Buff earthenware tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted in blue. The jug has a bulbous body with a short neck and large sparrow-beak lip, a loop handle which is concave on the inside and has an upward 'kick' at the lower end, and a low foot which is slightly concave underneath. The front is decorated with a family taking dinner at a round table surrounded by leafy scrollwork. Below is the date '1749' over a shell. Above are four putti, one of whom holds a punchbowl. On the left of the scene there are three serving-men, one of whom holds a tankard, and on the right, a gentleman and a lady are walking in a gardan, and a man is spilling liquid from a jug. Below the rim there is a wide border of scrolling foliage, and on each side of the lip, a dolphin. The handle is decorated with scrolling foliage, a lion's mask on the terminal, and rows of dots down the sides. The junction of the foot and body is encircled by a 'Van Dyke' border
