Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with mermaids, plant and diaper ornament

Buff earthenware, probably moulded, tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted in blue. Octagonal with four concave sides and four canted corners, flat top and central cylindrical mouth to take a cover, now missing. The top is decorated with two trefoil-shaped panels containing flowers, reserved in a ground of small swirls. Two of the concave sides are decorated with a mermaid holding a mirror under a flowering tree enclosed by a rectangular outline, and two with a vertical floral spray, similarly enclosed. The canted corners are decorated with diaper ornament.
