Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with European and Chinese figures

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed bluish white except for the base, and painted in blue. Octagonal with protruding corners, straight sides, and a flat top with central cylindrical mouth to take a cover, now missing. The top is decorated with four shaped panels enclosing chinese figures, reserved in a ground of four different diaper patterns. The two long sides are decorated respectively with a European gentleman standing with left hand on his hip and holding out his right to the side, and a European lady with her hands in a muff.The two narrow ends are each decorated with a vertical floral spray, and the four canted sides with the same diaper pattern.
