Description

Fritware coated in a blue glaze and painted with lustre

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in a blue glaze and painted with lustre
Shape: globular body on a low foot ring, a collared cylindrical neck rises onto a cup-shaped mouth (reconstructed).
Exterior: dominating the body and enclosed above and below by concentric bands of lustre, a wide frieze of lamassu comprising winged lion body, decorated with hollow circles and a human head, enhanced by a halo. These figures are surrounded by scrolling half palmettes and reserved in lustre. On the lower body, a loosely painted lustre inscription forms a concentric band. On the upper body, just below the join of the neck, a narrow band of dotted, scrolling circles is painted in lustre. On the neck, and repeated on the reconstructed mouth, bands of lustre are painted at regular intervals, framing a scrolling vegetal frieze. Glaze terminates on the lower body, where is forms a slight ridge.
Interior: the body is undecorated and the neck has a turquoise glaze
