Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with a man and a hare

Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted and sponged in blue. Circular with deep curved sides, standing on a high footring. The inside is decorated wth a central motif comprising two buds on stems and three sprays of foliage surrounded by two narrow concentric circles. Further up the sides there are eleven spaced groups of four dots. On the outside there is a landscape having on one side a man bending towards and a hare which is running to the left and looking back at him, and on the other, a building, and sponged trees.

History note: A family at Burwell, Cambridgeshire, from whom bought by Mr Morley, a dealer in Cambridge; bought from Mr Morley in 1893 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
