Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with Oriental marine landscape

Buff earthenware, press-moulded, tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted in blue. The wall pocket is in the shape of half of an inverted bell with a flat back which is pierced by two suspension holes 2.2 cm down from the top edge. The visible area is painted with a lake or bay with a tree and shurbs on a small isalnd at the bottom and a promontory on either side at the top, one with trees and a building, the other with two figures and a tree. The knob at the bottom is blue overall.

History note: Mr Morley, Cambridge, who according to the purchaser's catalogue 'obtained it, I believe, at Mr Christmas's sale in Cambridge'; bought about 1897 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
