Description

Renaissance maiolica one-handled cup, painted in polychrome with a central spot, concentric circles and radiating panels.

Pinkish-buff earthenware, covered overall with creamy-white slip and painted in blue, green, yellow, and orange, under translucent lead glaze. Circular with curved sides and one horizontal loop handle. A central green spot is surrounded by concentric circles: wide green, three narrow orange and wide yellow. The sides are decorated with radiating panels containing alternately green and orange stripes. Below the yellow rim are two orange bands. The top of the handle is touched with green and yellow. Outside, there are six slanting green strokes.

History note: Probably purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1933 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
