Description

Renaissance maiolica bowl, painted in polychrome with, in the middle, a stylised plant surrounded by concentric circles, and on the sides curved lines, flowers and foliage.

Pale red earthenware, covered with cream slip and painted in blue, green, yellow, and orange under translucent lead glaze. Circular with deep curved sides. In the middle is a stylised plant with three flowers, surrounded by three concentric orange circles over yellow. The sides are decorated with six curved blue lines each enclosing a flower and foliage of the same type, with three orange bands over yellow above and below.

History note: Probably purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1993 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
