Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted and sponged in blue, and painted in green, yellow, and brownish-red with Adam and Eve standing beside the Tree of Knowledge

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed, painted and sponged in blue, and painted in green, yellow and brownish red. Circular with a wide sloping rim and curved well, standing on a footring. The front is decorated with Adam and Eve standing to the left of the Tree of Knowledge with a sponged two-tier tree further to the left. Eve is shown in profile with her back to the Tree. Round the edge there are blue and yellow bands and blue dashes.

Note

This dish is extremely unusual in showing Eve in profile and both Adam and Eve to the left of the Tree of Knowledge instead of one on each side. It was probably made in Bristol or Brislington.
